The Documentary

In early 2016 the producers at WKU PBS realized that the story of foster care and adoption needed to be told.  Also realizing that this subject is broad and complex they decided to focus on providing basic information on why children find themselves in the foster care system, what they may experience while in the system, and why it is important for them to find their forever home.    Pre-production and planning began in the spring of 2016 with production taking place over the summer and wraping in late fall.

Every year hundreds of thousands of children enter the foster care system. In 2014 over 100,000 youth were waiting for adoption while 50,600 were actually adopted. Worst of all, 22,392 children were emancipated, meaning they exited the foster care system without a permanent, legal family.

Wanting to bring as much awareness to the topic as possible WKU PBS reached out to the Dave Thomas Foundation to see if they would be willing to work with the project.  Following a few emails and phone calls Wendy (Thomas) Morse (daughter of Dave Thomas, Founder of the Dave Thomas Foundation and the Wendy's restaurant chain) agreed to record an introduction and closing to the program.

Wendy's and the Dave Thomas Foundation were incredibly accommodating and the crew really enjoyed working with Wendy on the project.   If you want more information on this amazing organization and their noble efforts to continue the work of Dave Thomas to find a loving home for every child.
